The victorious Widnes Saints with the Co-operative Regional Winners Sheild
2008 after their win over New Broughton Rangers
as
WIDNES SAINTS 36 v WIGAN RIVERSIDERS 12
16.05.09
Widnes Saints beat a plucky Wigan side to record their third win in a row, to end the visitors run of five straight wins and lead the table. After just 8 minutes the visitors prop Steve Lowe was held up by Adam Middleton over the line after great work from Simon Atherton and Craig Middlemore but the Saints went to the other end and Lee Lamb scored the first of his three tries after good approach work from Dave Prescott, Scott Harland, Jamie Rowlands and Chris Cartledge. Stuart Harland converted the first of his six successes. Lamb scored a second despite sterling defence from Paul Courtney, Craig Hogan, awesome second row John Baybutt and captain Scott Whittle. Nine minutes later the hosts extended their lead through winger Mike Fairclough after the ball was wizzed through hands across the park via Ste Curphy, Craig millington and Jamie Rowlands, with Scott Harland's flip pass releasing Bob out wide. Stu Harland's safe boot brought the score at the break to 16-0.
With both sides playing excellent rugby big Andy Benson increased the lead when he brushed 5 would be tacklers aside to score. The Riversiders refused to lie down and tries from Marc Simon and Baybutt gave them hope of a recovery but the Saints wizzed the ball across field for loose forward Lamb to score his second. Baybutt scored yet again and were unlucky when the conversion attempt hit the post. Benson finished the scoring with 5 to go when he powered over from the halfway line to score underv the sticks. Widnes won on the day but they know that this is a very good Wigan side who will be there abouts at the end of the season.

RUNCORN RLC 28 WIDNES SAINTS44
09.05.09
Runcorn RLC turned out for their opening fixture of the 2009 campaign full of confidence after a productive pre-season. The first game at their new home was sponsored by Trust in Widnes and branded as “The Battle of the Bridge II” and was always going to be a hotly contested affair. Both sides gave debuts to lots of new faces. With Coach Calland commenting on how delighted he was with the performance from Fozard, Willings, Green, Dunne, Edge and Kelly. Rob Calland's men found themselves behind early on to a nicely worked try down the left hand side, converted by the Saints. After some bruising exchanges in the middle Runcorn’s defence was once again breached, with the Saints missing the conversion. Runcorn, playing up the hill, started to probe at the Widnes defence and scored with Kyle McGreevey on the end of a well worked move. Courtnage provided great yards up the hill with some powerful running, and usually supported by the superb running of Jamie Edge. Both sides continued to search for an opening and with the introduction of a number of ex-Runcorn players Widnes were next on the score sheet. Again Runcorn’s playmaker Willings combined with Patterson to put Forshaw in for another try. Widnes responded with another try after Runcorn’s defence began to tire.
Half Time 10-26
After some words of encouragement from Calland and Leech, Runcorn responded perfectly by scoring two quick fire tries right after half time. With the hill to Runcorn ’s advantage, Widnes began to tire but with a slick move against the run of play, started and finished by MOM Craig Millington, Widnes started to get into the 2nd half. Runcorn once again refused to lay down and scored a well worked try in the corner with McGreevey going round his opposite number to score from the half way line. Unfortunately for Runcorn, their debut at The Pavilions ended in defeat with Widnes once again going in with a powerhouse try from Lamb.
Coaches Calland and Leech where disappointed with the loss but very pleased with the way the team played, the individual performances of the players and proved that the greatest game on the planet is alive and kicking on the south of the Mersey. Runcorn RLC would like to thank club sponsors Karalius Brothers for donating the rugby posts and Tony from Integra Precision Engineering for welding them together plus Stuart from Beechwood Gardening Services for erecting the posts.

WIDNES SAINTS 48 v BLACKPOOL SEA EAGLES 8
25.04.09
Despite a brave and gutsy performance, Blackpool Sea Eagles went down 48 – 8 in an exciting clash away to former two time RLC champions Widnes Saints. With a few late withdrawals, Blackpool could only muster 15 players for this trip and fielded a youthful looking outfit, handing debuts to six new signings. The opening stages proved to an even affair with both sides having chances to score, but neither able to convert them. Some terrific scrambling defence from Sea Eagles Jordan Schreiber, Matty Egan and Tom Sanderson prevented the hosts from crossing, whilst at the other end centre Steve Stollery was proving a handful coming close to giving the visitors the lead on two occasions. The deadlock was finally broken on 15 minutes as a momentary slip in defence by Blackpool allowed one of the Widnes forwards to power his way over for a converted try. To their credit, the Sea Eagles took this setback in their stride and continued to produce a good brand of attacking rugby. Forwards Efstathios Christodoulou and Tony Green were making yards with every carry, which created a great platform for the increasingly influential halfback duo of Stephen Galvin and Ben Stubberfield to try and prise open the hosts defence. Despite coming close to crossing the tryline on a few occasions, Blackpool could not find their way over and soon found themselves eighteen points behind as quick handling and good offloading by the home side, saw Widnes cross for two further tries before the halftime interval.
A further score by the home side minutes into the second period saw Blackpool go 24 - 0 behind, but this seemed to spark off the Sea Eagles best period of the game. They notched their first points of the afternoon as powerful runs from Gary Whitehead and Tom Rowley carried the Seasiders upfield, which allowed Stubberfield and Steve Harrison to combine brilliantly and send centre Antony Clark powering his way over the whitewash from close range for a well deserved try. The deficit was reduced further minutes later as Galvin sliced through some tired looking Saints defence before drawing the fullback and releasing Joe Bullock on a 40m dash to the tryline and 24 – 8 scoreline. Blackpool were clearly on top at this stage and off the back of some great carries from Tom Harrison and Warren Beggs amongst others, they came to close to adding to their tally on more than one occasion. Loose forward Harrison almost squeezed in at the corner, before Clark came close to notching his second try only to be denied by some last ditch tackling from the home side. With the game entering the final quarter there was still a chance that the Eagles could come away with something, but unfortunately those hopes evaporated in a five minute spell as Widnes took advantage of some tired Sea Eagles defending, to cross for two further converted tries and effectively seal the game at 36 – 8. Despite the game being gone, Blackpool continued to battle away trying to grab at least another consultation try and almost got it as Bullock sliced through only to pulled down yards short of the line. The Saints took advantage of their reprieve and added to their score, crossing twice more in the closing minutes for a final scoreline of 48 – 8.
Despite the final scoreline, Blackpool could be very proud of their performance against a very good Widnes Saints outfit. The effort and commitment on show from the Sea Eagles outfit, combined with periods of excellent attacking rugby, will give the club great optimism for the season ahead. In spite of their being more than a few suitable candidates, in fitting with the spirit on show, the club decided to award the man of match to the entire team instead of singling out the contribution of just one player. Blackpool will keen to build on this performance when they play host to Wigan Riversiders on Saturday 9th May.
Widnes Saints: Dean French, Andrew Bowles, Simon Hicks, Ryan Brown, Kyle Ogburn, Lee Campbell, Martin Scott, Terry Owen, Paul Holland, Dominic Smith, Kieran Lindsey, Mark Grady, Liam Ward. Replacements: Mark Holland, Martin Dyas, Ian Field, Ronnie Wharton, John Woolrich.

WIDNES SAINTS 28 v NEW BROUGHTON RANGERS 12
09.08.08
Widnes Saints retain their title of Co-operative Regional Winners of the Rugby League Conference but only after a tremendous effort from Salford’s New Broughton. The opening points went to the hosts when Craig Millington’s kick deceived excellent fullback Alex Clemie and Dan Baker for Chris Cartledge to chip ahead and score under the posts after only 4 minutes. Ryan Millington converted the first of his four successes of the day. The Saints were to score no more points in a half dominated by silly penalties and ferocious defence from the visitors. Jez Whitfield, Ben Bailey and Craig Duggan all went closer only to be repelled by excellent defence with Matt Bateman, Lee Salisbury, Clemie and Seb Rowe outstanding. In attack props Mark Greenhalgh and Mark Salisbury worked their socks off prompted by inspirational Neil Kirwan who coolly slotted home 2 of the many penalties to record a score of 6-4 at the break with everything to play for.
Rangers drew level straight after the break through Kirwan before man of the match Brian Gill raced in when Ben Bailey’s break created space. New Broughton immediately hit back with a converted try to go 2 points clear. The Millington brothers were now linking and Ryan broke free from 40 metres to feed Craig to go under the sticks. With the visitors for once on the back foot Ryan created mayhem when his quick links with Craig across field found Gill out wide who scored. Millington’s kick off the touch line bounced in off the sticks before he broke free again to find Bailey only for the move to be called back. Jamie edge outstanding in attack and defence intercepted near his own line to feed Mike Stevenson who linked with Danny Sharples to release Craig Millington to race in for a Ryan Millington converted try to finish the game.
In their first season credit must be heaped on New Broughton who pushed the champions all the way and if Saints are to progress in the National Play-offs they will have to show a much better performance.
Man of the match for Widnes Saints Brian Gill pushed by Ben Bailey and Mike Stevenson with Matt Bateman, Seb Rowe and Lee Salisbury outstanding for the Rangers.

WIDNES SAINTS 40 v RUNCORN VIKINGS 10
19.07.08
There were no losers in this “Battle of the Bridge” sponsored by Trust in Widnes with rugby league being the big winner. Runcorn played their part in an excellent advert for amateur sport marred only by the unfortunate injuries to Paul Briscoe and Jason Skarrett of Runcorn. Saints opened lively with a try from Ryan Millington who was put in by Ben Bailey. Trust in Widnes man of the match Andy Benson powered over for the first of his hat trick after Tony Hannon, Bailey and Danny Sharples created space. Kevin Gamble and Briscoe went close for the visitors before Hannon and Jez Whitfield released Craig Dourley to scorch home under the sticks giving Millington an easier conversion in the strong wind. Runcorn’s probing with Shaun McWhirter and Gamble to the fore created a try for Dave Patterson who steam rolled his way under the sticks for a McWhirter converted try. The hosts came straight back when Brian Gill and Ben Black made 40 yards for Benson to cruise in. The Vikings would not lie down and McWhirter, Martin Leather and Runcorn man of the match Ste Worrall all went close.
The outstanding Millington showed his class from a Will Tilleke pass side stepping his way in from 30 yards for an own converted try. Adam Prendergast intercepted a Viking attack to go 20 yards to feed Chris Cartledge who exchanged passes with loose forward Chris Freeman before darting over. Tilleke, Sharples and Bailey exchanged passes before releasing Benson for his hat trick. Still Runcorn came back with only last ditch tackles stopping Phil dean, Liam Ward and the excellent substitute Martin Murphy. Chris Fenlon scored a 20 yard try to complete the home scoring before young Paul Dempsey crowned a good day scoring out wide for the visitors.
Trust In Widnes Man of the match Andy Benson who scored three for Saints and excellent centre Ste Worrall for the Vikings. The Saints took the Trust in Widnes Trophy but Runcorn will surely be intent on taking it next year.
Try Scorers: Andy Benson (3), Ryan Millington (2), Craig Dourley, Chris Fenlon, and Chris Cartledge.
Goals: Ryan Millington (3), Danny Sharples.

BLACKPOOL SEA EAGLES 10 vWIDNES SAINTS 52
05.07.08
Saints virtually confirmed themselves as winners of the North West Division despite an horrendous injury to replacement Tony Dillon, the game consequently being halted for 50 minutes and reduced to a 60 minute game. They had much too much for a plucky Blackpool side who must have assistance from the league otherwise their demise looks imminent despite all of the hard work put in. Early tries from Jez Whitfield (2), Craig Millington, Danny Sharples and Mike Fairclough pushed the visitors into a 24 point lead after only 18 minutes when Dillon broke his leg. On the resumption tries from Ryan Millington, Jez Whitfield for a deserved hat trick and Brian Gill pushed the lead to 40 before the plucky seasiders scored two tries from Tomas Sanderson and Ste Harrison the latter being converted excellently by their man of the match young Karl Davies. With Danny Barr and Davies involved in every defensive move the hosts were not likely to lie down and it was important that Fairclough ended the try scoring with his second. Ryan Millington scored three conversions, Danny Sharples, Jez Whitfield and Ronnie Wharton one each. To emphasise the spirit that this game was played in the most resounding cheer of the day came right at the end when Blackpool player coach Tom Harrison clamped his opposite number player coach Wharton and barged him into touch.
Man of the match Jez Whitfield who scored three and made two pushed all the way by Ryan Millington and Danny Sharples. Blackpool man of the match undoubtedly second row Baz Tucker.
Try Scorers: Jez Whitfield (3), Mike Fairclough (2), Danny Sharples, Craig Duggan, Ryan Millington, Craig Millington, Brian Gill.

WIDNES SAINTS 42 v LYMM WOLVES 20
28.06.08
Lymm Wolves pushed the league leaders all the way in a pulsating game marred only by the broken arm to Scott Harland. Chris Freeman was stopped just short in the first minute and Mike Stevenson was caught and put in touch at the last minute by full back Martin Judge. Ben Bailey and John Cuerden went close before Harland created the space for Shaun Dourley to race over to open the scoring. Ryan Millington was successful with the first of his five conversions. Man of the match Craig Millington was causing havoc each time he got the ball and he jinxed to the line to feed the supporting Tony Hannon. A series of penalties kept Lymm in the game and from one of these the excellent Peter Cannon powered over giving Mark Martin the easier of his two conversions. Will Tilleke pushed 4 defenders out of the way and slipped a ball to Harland to race 30 metres. Rich Jones raced in for the visitors after a Saints knock on only for the hosts to score a controversial try after Jamie Edge and Bailey contrived top put Adam Middleton in at the corner. There was no questioning mike Stevenson’s game breaking try just before the break when Brian Gill and Craig Duggan released him to outpace the visitors defence to race 50 metres to the corner. Half time score 26-12.
Lymm hit back with tries for substitute Neil Ashurst and Cannon again after another series of silly penalties. Jamie Rowlands and Graeme Buck both went close before Ryan Millington took it upon himself to chip through and follow up to score under the sticks. Tilleke was making ground each time he touched the ball and the supporting Dourley and the Millingtons were creating chance after chance but the resolute Warrington defence held out. Craig Millington mesmerised them after 70 minutes to score a superb individual try. Bailey, Hannon and Craig Millington combined to free speedy Danny Sharples but the conversion was just wide from Tilleke.
Excellent performance by Lymm who have improved beyond all doubt but very ill disciplined home performance with too many silly penalties.
Man of the match Craig Millington pushed all the way by Ben Bailey and Mike Stevenson. Lymm man of the match undoubtedly Peter Cannon pushed by Lee Pritchard, Martin Judge and Mark Robinson..

NORTHWICH STAGS 16 v WIDNES SAINTS 38
21.06.08
Widnes Saints stay top of the league after a hard fought game against the Stags who had not previously lost this season. They came out all guns blazing using their powerful forwards and only the Saints superior fitness and skill won them the game late on. Roger Pickering tried an early field goal which went wide in the heavy wind before captain Craig Millington burst onto a Scott Harland and Mike Allen move to race in for his first try. After defending 3 sets of six on their own line the Saints defence let Northwich man of the match Lee McGarry in near the posts giving Nathan Heath an easy conversion to draw level. Only excellent defence from Ben Bailey, Ben Black, Craig Duggan and Shaun Dourley kept the hosts from crossing the Saints line. Still on defence and on 30 minutes Mike Fairclough picked up a loose ball to fly in from 30 metres. A break from Brian Gill and Adam Middleton came to an end before excellent stand off Chris Dale dummied over to put the hosts 2 points up at the break.
Heath burrowed over to put the Stags 6 ahead and they resolutely held onto this with some fierce tackling until Fairclough got his second after a Shaun Dourley kick had deceived the entire home side. Ryan Millington came up with the game breaker and Northwich heartbreaker after 70 minutes when from an Allen break he chipped ahead to outpace a tiring defence. The visitors then ran in 3 tries in 7 minutes to settle the game. Scott Harland scored after the Millington brothers combined to make space before Craig got his second after sidestepping the mesmerized Stags defence to score under the sticks. The Millingtons again combined to allow Allen to score in the dying minutes.
Man of the match Stuart Harland pushed all the way by youngsters Ben Bailey and Mike Allen. Tremendous game well refereed by official Rod Steel of Oldham.
Try Scorers: Craig Millington (2), Mike Fairclough (2), Ryan Millington, Scott Harland, Mike Allen. Goals: Ryan Millington (5).

NEW BROUGHTON RANGERS 12 v WIDNES SAINTS 52
14.06.08
Widnes Saints stay top of the league after an easy away win against the only team to beat them this season. Led by inspirational captain Craig Millington and prompting from the Harland brothers the visitors raced into a 28 point lead in as many minutes with tries from Millington put in by Mike Stevenson on the last tackle, Craig Duggan revelling in his new role of second row with 2 tries, Danny Sharples with a 40 metre race along the touch line and Mike Fairclough who copied Sharples going 40 metres on the other wing. Every Broughton kick off was returned by Ben Bailey, John Cuerden, Duggan and Stu Harland and with halfbacks Ryan Millington and Shaun Dourley setting up moves points were gained on almost every attack. The hosts used the practice gained in kicking off to deceive the Saints defence for their man of the match Lee Salisbury to create space for centre Matt Bateman to ghost in after 34 minutes. The Saints reply was immediate with a try for Millington contrived by Brian Gill and Ryan Millington to make a 04-34 half time score.
The hosts started the second half with a more determined defence with Neil Kirwan, Dan Baker, Dieter Marquardt and Mark Salisbury outstanding only for the relentless Saints to wear them down and score through Millington after an excellent 20 metre break from Duggan. With young props Bailey and Cuerden taking everything Broughton could offer and giving more back with very strong thoughtful running the lively hooker inevitably scored a third and fourth when he dummied through and scored under the sticks. As Saints took their foot off the gas the hosts scored two long range tries through Michael De Bot, but too little too late. Fairclough rounded off the scoring under the sticks when put in by Joe Andrews. Ryan Millington rounded off a great game with 6 conversions.
Man of the match 5 try Craig Millington pushed all the way by youngster Ben Bailey and 2 try Craig Duggan. Game well refereed by official Malcolm Fallon.
